Nestled amid lush green vegetation, Wessex Estate is a colonial-style residential estate which JTC has re-adapted into a creative enclave. It comprises a total of 26 walk-up apartment blocks and 58 semi-detached houses which spread across the entire 28 ha of land. Well complemented by vast and green open spaces, the estate is a picture of serene tranquility. Surrounded by open spaces and trees, the estate provides a soothing and relaxing ambience for its residents. Constructed around the 1940’s, the Black and White walk-up apartments and semi-detached houses have now become home to a diverse community of artists, designers and acting professionals. As part of the one-north development initiative, Wessex Estate is slated to be a hub for the creative enclave.

My father was based in RAF Changi in 1965 and I'm trying to track down where we lived. I think it may have been the Wessex Estate?

Our house was semi-detached and had balconies along the front upstairs. There was a field of oxen opposite and the jungle behind. I know there was a kampong nearby because my sister got lost and was found there. We visited our ahmas home - a house on stilts - so a Malay kampong?

There was a small swamp at the end of our row, which years later was drained and was discovered to be a mass burial grave. There was a cemetery nearby - Chinese or Malay. I went in there with a boy from the street behind and we were chased out by a local with a scythe! The boy and his family sent messages home to their grandma on tape.

We would walk to an Amahs night market and would walk along what I thought to be a very wide monsoon drain - but was probably a canal - the pictures of Bukit Timah canal from that era look the same.

There was also a row of shops in walking distance -I remember watching a dragon dance there.

Any photos of the semi-detached houses or verification of landmarks
would be much appreciated!

Thanks
